How to Set up a Funnel in Google Analytics

In Google Analytics, a funnel can be set up to track a series of pages that users visit as they browse your website. Funnels can be an efficient way to analyze how effective your website is at leading visitors to a particular goal. For example, funnels can be useful if your website is designed to sell a product and visitors are required to land on separate pages to fill out shipping or payment information. If visitors navigate away from your website and do not complete the payment process, or goal, funnel reporting can be used to help you determine ways to improve your conversion process. Funnels can only be created when you have Goals set up to track Uniform Resource Locator (URL) destinations of visitors. Continue reading to learn more about how to set up a funnel within a goal in Google Analytics.

Create a Funnel

  1. Visit the Google Analytics website that can be found in the Sources section of this article to access your account.
  2. Sign in with your Google Analytics username and password or click on "Access Analytics."
  3. Locate the profile you want to set up a funnel for under Website Profiles.
  4. Click on the "Edit" link to the right of the profile under the Actions column.
  5. Click on "Edit" next to the Goal you want to create a funnel for.
    • You may also click on "Add Goal" and follow the prompts to create a new URL destination goal.
  6. Click on "Yes, create a funnel for this goal" below the Goal Details section.
  7. Type the first URL from the series of pages for the funnel and a name for it next to Step 1.
    • For example, if your goal is to sell a product that requires visitors to click on a specific link that leads them to the checkout process, enter that link here.
    • Do not include the domain in your URL. For example, if the URL for your checkout page includes your website domain followed by a forward slash and "checkout.html," just type "checkout.html" into the space for URL.
  8. Place a check mark in the box next to Required Step if you want to make this URL a mandatory step in tracking conversion.
    • If visitors land on the checkout page using an alternate method, such as typing the URL directly in the address bar of their browser, their completion of the goal will not show up as conversion in the funnel report, also known as the Funnel Visualization Report.
  9. Click on "Add Goal Funnel Step" to add any additional URLs to your funnel.
    • You can add up to 10 different URLs to your funnel.
  10. Click on the "Save Goal" button to save your funnel.

Access the Funnel Visualization Report

  1. Click on the "Analytics Settings" link in the upper-left corner to return to the Overview screen displaying your website profiles.
  2. Click on the "View report" link next to the website profile you created the funnel for.
  3. Click on the "Goals" link on the left side of the screen to expand the section.
  4. Click on the drop-down menu next to "Select Goal" to select the funnel you want to view data for.
    • Funnel reports will only display funnel data after the funnels have been created; you will not have the ability to view historical data prior to setting up funnels.
  5. Click on the "Funnel Visualization" link below Goals to display the data for your funnel conversion rates.
  6. Click on the "Goal Abandoned Funnels" link below the Goals section to view where visitors navigated away from the pages in your funnel during the conversion process.
For example, if the funnel requires visitors to land on a page to provide payment information, but payment is never provided, you may want to consider making improvements or changes to that page. This can include changes such as fixing broken links or adjusting product prices to improve your conversion rates.
